National Holocaust Museum was the brainchild of Stephen and James Smith who visited Israel’s national Holocaust Museum in 1991. They were stunned and challenged by the information gathered during their journey and knew, on their return to the UK, that the Holocaust had to be taught, discussed and understood by all, especially school children.
See their website for information about accessibility.
We will spend 2 hours at the National Holocaust Museum for you to explore at your own pace, before moving on to:
Newark-on-Trent
In Newark you can spend the afternoon as you choose. You might like to explore:
The Market Place, where there is generally a collectors/antiques market every Thursday.
The Governor’s House A diagonal path from the Governor’s House to the south door of the Parish Church was laid so the Governor could walk to the church without soiling his feet. The Market Place has retained this original pattern, with the path marked out by metal studs.
St Mary Magdalene Parish Church Dating back to the 12th century, the church was built up over the centuries and displays fine examples of Transitional Norman, Early English, Decorated Gothic and Perpendicular Gothic architecture.
National Civil War Centre in the town centre sweeps you into a remarkable story of superstitions, serious sibling rivalry and seismic change which has affected the country we live in today. See the realities of 17th century life through the eyes of people who lived it. £7.50 Concessions.
Newark Castle – partially closed until Autumn 2026.
Cost: £22, including £9 National Holocaust Museum entry fee.
